The side shuffle is a really, really important piece of tennis footwork. It allows you to move in one direction but be able to change direction extremely quickly. This is important because you don't always know where your opponent is going to hit the tennis ball. The side shuffle allows you to move back to the middle of the court, which cuts down on the amount of open court your opponent has to hit into, and still be able to stop and change direction if your opponent decides to hit the tennis ball behind you.
